Dubrovnik
About Dubrovnik: Surrounded by walls, trapped in time - the one and only Dubrovnik!

"If the world had more then one Dubrovnik, only one of them would be true - the true one, the sterling one, the only Dubrovnik made of stone and light. This open palm under the stars, stretching to the world. The unique stage on which past and future have a common meaning, their own creative measure ... "
Jure Kaštelan

Dubrovnik is not only the most popular destination in Croatia, its recognition is measured on a global scale.
Dubrovnik's planetary popularity is ensured by its breathtaking old town center.

Preserved stone walls and architecture make it one of the most important cultural monuments in the world.
The entire Old Town is included in the UNESCO list of world heritage.

Dubrovnik's current beauty is also the memory of its long and glorious history.

After its founding in the 7-th century Dubrovnik became a powerful center of the Dubrovnik Republic.
Republic of Dubrovnik (aka Republic Ragusa) at the time was one of the greatest naval force in the world and the only force that could compete with the powerful Venice.

Republic held virtues such as human freedom above all else, this is illustrated by the fact that slavery has already been abolished in 1418.

By using skillful diplomacy and trade, Dubrovnik has remained relatively independent in its governance.
The city was ruled by aristocracy that had successfully ruled Dubrovnik Republic for centuries.
Dubrovnik was at the peak of its power in the 16th and 17th century.

Dubrovnik managed to preserve its independence until 1806. when it fell under the rule of France.
That year, Dubrovnik found itself in an extremely difficult situation because it was under intense siege by the joint Russian-Montenegrin Navy that fired over 3000 cannon bombs towards the city.

Napoleon exploited the vulnerability of Dubrovnik and captured the town by tricking its rulers. He and his army presented themselves as friends who just want to go through the city to continue fighting in the south.
For the first time in its history, Dubrovnik allowed a foreign army to enter its territory.
On that day we can say that Dubrovnik diplomacy made their greatest mistake.

As soon as Napoleon's troops led by General Marmont entered the city, they immediately captured all the key points and forced city authorities to surrender. That day marked the end of the famous Republic of Dubrovnik.

Today, in modern Croatia, Dubrovnik is highlighted as the most important tourist destination. Every year it is being visited by large number of foreign guests.

Dubrovnik emphasizes the quality of services and accommodation. There are large number of hotels and apartments and almost the entire economy is subordinated to its most important industry - tourism.
