Although there are no written records, according to the local legends, first Croats who came to the region were staggered by the amazing beauty they found and thus decided to build their fortress here.
These memorials go far back in the ninth century.

Furthermore there are reliable and documented information from the year 1066 and are linked to the charter of King Kresimir IV - this is when the official history of this beautiful town begins.

The first medieval town core is made of three town districts: Town, Dolac and Gorica.
The fortified city was for centuries a kind of monument to Croatian man.

The forts that defended Šibenik throughout history are still standing proudly, these are: St.Ana, St. John and St. Michael, Šubićevac and the old fort of St. Nicholas at the entrance to Šibenik bay - which guarded the sea entrance and kept this famous Croatian city safe and secure as a priceless treasure.

In each and every small alley, on every major and lesser square, on the coast and fortifications - there are historic monuments of the first class values ranging from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance to Baroque.

What makes Šibenik all the more valuable is the fact that Šibenik is the only city on the coast where the foundations are not built by the Romans, but Croatian artists.

This can be seen at every step of the way, especially at St. James Cathedral, where the knowledge and love of the Croatian man Juraj Matejev Dalmatinc has been woven into the stone.

Proud people of Šibenik had already then shown to the world that they are part of urban civilization which does not lag behind in any way when compared to the most famous cities of Europe.

Celebrities such as Faust Vrančić and Juraj Šižgorić also contributed to the fame of their city and made sure that Šibenik is mentioned among the greatest cities in the European cultural life.

The most recent history of Šibenik is also linked to another world famous name - "Mozart from Baldekin" , basketball virtuoso Dražen Petrović (1964-1993), one of the greatest Croatian, European and world sports figures of all time, tragically deceased in a car accident.
